Valentine's Day Home Decor With What's At Hand
/I’d love to show you how to create valentine’s day home decor using what’s at hand. Using what we have and curating it into something special is both a challenge and a joy to create. And why not consider a special home cooked meal to go with a pretty tablescape for a romantic dinner? Let’s design your Valentine’s evening.
The Romance Starts At Home
We don’t need Valentine’s Day reservations, expensive menus, or a crowded restaurant to celebrate an enjoyable time with our loved ones. As an interior decorator, I can confidently say that romance is a design decision: intentional, layered, definitely doable on a budget. In fact, the most romantic evenings often happen right at home where you pick the playlist, the lighting and the wine. Add a favourite home cooked meal and you’re well on your way to a very special time.
As a re-design professional I almost always do a walk-through of a home when I’m consulting, looking at things in other rooms that we might repurpose and bring into the space we’re planning. Get your thinking cap on and look around at things you have in ways you might use them differently to create your valentine decor and table.
The Room Itself Is Where The Romance Starts
Let’s start things off with the room itself. The first thing I’m recommending is to change the lighting.
turn off the overhead lighting or at the very least, turn down the dimmers if you have them
you can bring in lamps from other rooms to help set the mood
bring out your candles and set them out lit at varying heights
add some fairy lights
keep the glow warm and soft
You want to make the distinction between “mid-week dinner” and “we planned this.” Soft light easily changes everything — skin tone, food, mood.
Turn on some easy, familiar music in the background and add a lightly scented simmer pot or diffuser. You’re well on your way to creating atmosphere.
A Pretty (and Affordable) Valentine’s Tablescape
Let’s Start With What You Have
this is about creating texture and glow
you don’t need heart-shaped plates - use what you have and create layers
white plates or neutral are best but don’t worry if yours aren’t
layer in some linens
Layering will instantly elevate your table.
get out your favourite tablecloth
get creative and use a neutral throw if you need to
lay out some cloth napkins-use existing tea towels in a pinch
make a table runner from an unused curtain or some fabric remnants
candlelight - Yes!
Use what you own. Tapers, pillars and tea lights grouped down the middle of your table is a beautiful touch. Varying heights, sizes and even co ordinating colours add interest and that very special feeling.
TIP: Don’t use scented candles near food.
Florals Without Breaking The Bank
Simple floral arrangements feel very intentional in a space and grocery store flowers work perfectly. You can divide a single bouquet into smaller vases placed on the table and here and there in the room.
Why not use some faux floral stems that you already have?
I’ve been known to trek out to the garden and cut a few snips of evergreen from my shrubs when I didn’t have anything else on hand. Simple and elegant aren’t hard to create.
A Personal Touch
Add a sense of intimacy to your table with a romantic note carefully folded and tucked into the napkin.
Take a moment to make a handcrafted place card, even if it’s just the two of you. The perfect moment to write your pet names!
These little details are what help make it a meaningful evening together.
The Memorable Details
pull chairs out before your partner sits
light the table candles just before serving
put phones away
take your time throughout the meal
serve each course instead of placing everything on the table at once
Small gestures equal big impact.
Elevated Colour Palettes
Something sophisticated always wins over the novelty items we think we need to buy. Look around and see what you have to create some of these classic, elevated colour combinations. If you’ve got red, by all means, put it out.
Blush, ivory and gold
Burgundy and charcoal
Cream, greenery and candlelight - oooh la la
Easy Romantic Dinner Ideas
Style the Food Like a Designer
Keep in mind that you’re designing an experience and not just serving dinner. Here are a few tips to help with presentation that takes things from everyday to something special in just moments.
use white plates to make colours pop
wipe plate edges clean just like a real chef
garnish with fresh herbs - easy peasy
serve dessert on smaller plates - I’m a bit obsessed with vintage glass ones
add a sprig of mint or a dusting of icing sugar and even store bought dessert just got elevated
Affordable Valentine Meal Ideas
You do not need complicated recipes, you need thoughtful ones.
The Starter
We don’t usually have starters for our everyday evening meal. Adding one instantly elevates your menu and tells your loved ones something special is happening. Here are a couple of easy ideas.
Caprese Heart Skewers
Grab a few cherry tomatoes
Slice them on the diagonal and flip one end putting them together to make a little heart - so cute
Skewer with mini mozzarellas (bocconcini) and basil leaves
Drizzle a bit of balsamic/oilive oil mixture over the top
A 6” skewer is the right size
OR
Warm Baguette
Warm a store bought baguette, brush with olive oil and some sea salt - rustic, simple, romantic
The Main
Chicken Parmesan
Grab a couple of chicken breasts and sear them in a pan.
Add some garlic and cook through, then add a bit of cream and some parmesan cheese.
Simmer for 20 minutes, serve over mashed potatoes or pasta with a side of green beans and you’ve got a lovely, indulgent entree.
Dessert
Chocolate Strawberries
The classic chocolate dipped strawberry always wins. 10 minutes and you’re done!
Wash and dry your strawberries, leaving the husk on - looks so pretty and makes a little handle.
Use chocolate chips ( 3/4 cup) and melt in 30 second intervals in the microwave, stirring until they’re melted in about 90 seconds total.
A small bowl lets you dip deep so the berry gets more yummy coverage. Use a toothpick and swirl them in the chocolate.
Set them spaced out on a lined sheet pan.
Best done the day of. Anything before requires refrigeration that causes the chocolate to sweat.
Valentines Day Home Decor Final Thoughts
Hopefully some of these ideas will inspire you to create a special Valentine’s Day celebration at home. It’s not all about saving money. It is about investing intention towards those you love.
A thoughtfully put together space with soft lighting, layered textures, a curated tablescape and a simple home-cooked meal feels extraordinary.
And that’s what good design does. It transforms ordinary moments into something worth remembering.
Happy Valentine’s Day!
